Taking advantage of the virtual modality of the conference this year, HPCS 2020 organizers have decided to focus the social events on Spain and the beautiful city of Seville in the south of Spain and the capital of the Andalusia region.

Seville is the heir of diverse cultures that settled for thousands of years along the banks of the Guadalquivir river. It has an important artistic and monumental heritage, from which we can highlight the civil architecture, including palaces, government buildings, public spaces, hospitals and the University, among others. In addition, we can also find a huge number of churches and convents. They all make Seville a unique city, resulting from the mixture of numerous cultures in the Mediterranean sea.

Immerse yourself in the heritage left by the Muslims, Christians, Jews, Africans, and Gypsies in Spain. The legacy they left, and how that legacy has influenced contemporary Spain in architecture, gastronomy, folklore & culture and the way to be and to live.

The Royal Alcazar Palace in Sevilla was the set for southern Westeros, the home of Prince Doran Martell, and the fiery and vengeful Oberyn's daughters. The palace is also a breathtaking monument, declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you will admire beautiful and colorful ceramic tiles and delightful renaissance gardens with fountains, flowers, a maze, and secret and romantic retreats.

We will also explore together with other sets like Italica (King's Landing Dragonpit), Almodovar del Rio (High Garden) or Osuna (Daznat pit). We will listen to lots of anecdotes and funny stories only the locals know about. Finally, you will not believe how similar the real stories of the Royal Alcazar and the stories George R. R. Get Ready to Cook Virtually - A Spanish Cuisine Tutorial

In this edition, the banquet dinner is DIY, but with delicious Spanish tapas and a good Spanish teacher. Tapas are a heritage for the Spanish people, and a particular social way of life. Moreover, the best recipes are from Andalusia! We will explain to you the history behind the tapas, taverns, bars, and our traditions and customs while cooking. The dishes we prepare and eat will depend on the season, being always typical Andalusian and Spanish traditional courses. One good example of our cooking class menu could be:

• Gazpacho or Salmorejo Andaluz (typical tomato soup)

• Arroz (paella, soupy rice, ...)

• Gambas al Ajillo (Garlic Shrimps)

• Patatas a lo Pobre (A dish with potatoes & Vegetables)

Thursday, March 25, 2021: HPCS 2020 Social Event - A Spanish Cultural Event

Welcome to the Flamenco World of Eva de Triana, Seville, Spain

Live in first person an immersion in the flamenco culture, through this online experience, from your home. Welcome to the Flamenco World of Eva de Triana, Seville, Spain.

We will start from scratch, after a brief presentation, you will learn basic notions about flamenco origins and culture. Then, we will break down all the flamenco movements into parts, starting with basic body positions, an introduction to professional flamenco zapateado, as well as braceo (arm), basic hand movements and palmas (clapping). After you feel comfortable with them, you will be ready to learn, dance and enjoy, a short and fun flamenco coreo (choreography). A flamenco coreo to dance at home or parties or at our Seville Fair or our bars, if you have the opportunity to visit and enjoy Seville in the future.

To enjoy the experience to the fullest, incorporate some flamenco outfit: For women: a flowing skirt/dress with comfortable shoes. Medium heel shoes or sneakers (no platforms or sandals), a shawl and a flower for your hair. For men: comfortable shoes (dress shoes or sneakers) and a sleeveless shawl. It can be done without shoes.

Three Cultures: How Christians, Muslims and Jews lived together in Spain

and in Seville back in the 1300s

The history of Spain is one of the most entertaining, fascinating and complex. This is the case thanks to every civilization and person that has inhabited it over its history of more than 3000 years; including the Tartessians, Iberians, Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Visigoths, Romans, Almohads, Almoravids, Sephardi and Christian Spaniards. All of these have contributed to form Spain’s cultural heritage.

Andalusia, located in the southern part of Spain, is the country’s most populated region. It is a land of olive trees brought from Asia more than a thousand years ago. A land of streets scented with orange blossom that bloom in springtime from the orange trees, originally brought over by the Arabs. It is the birthplace of flamenco, or rather ‘fellah min gueir ard’, which means ‘peasant without land’, a phrase produced as a result of the influence and mixing of the gypsy, Arabic, Cristian and Jewish cultures.

Seville is a city whose history is comprised of the Tartessians, Carthaginians, Visigoths, Romans, Almohads, Almoravids, Sephardi and Christian Spaniards. The city’s history is complex but thrilling at the same time, a history of legends, theories, different peoples, and invasions from faraway nations such as the Vikings. Seville’s cultural heritage is simply wonderful to find out about and marvel at.

In this Tour of the Three Cultures, run live from Seville’s city centre, you will learn about the history of the main monuments and landmarks, such as:

• The three defence towers: Torre del Oro or The Tower of Gold, torre de la Plata or the Tower of Silver and

tower of Abdel Aziz, all built in different centuries after the Viking attack that ravaged the city in seven days.

Mention of the old city wall, who lived outside of it, and how the brotherhood of la Caridad helped the terminally ill.

• The Real Alcázar of Seville: the greatest example of Mudejar architecture, built on the site of the Alcazaba

de la Bendición from the Islamic period.

• Seville Cathedral: what started as a mosque is now the largest gothic cathedral in the world, with some parts

of the mosque still preserved.

• Mention of the General Archive of the Indies and Christopher Columbus’ relationship with Seville, as well as

how he obtained the funds for his travels.

• Barrio Santa Cruz: the history of what was once the Jewish quarter.

• The arrival of the Jews, or Sefardi, to the Iberian Peninsula, and the history of Sefarad until 1391.
